Are You Struggling to Sleep?

14 April 2020

Allison read Get Some Rest: A Brief Guide for Those on the COVID-19 Front Lines and reflected on how it’s probably never been more difficult or more important for all of us to get a good night’s sleep.

How do you describe life in the time of COVID-19? Difficult? Challenging? Exciting? Peaceful? Unprecedented? Horrible? Terrifying? Incredible? Stressful? Hopeful? Inspiring? I’ve had clients use all those adjectives with me and more. Our conversations last month primarily were about how to deal with the most urgent professional and personal needs during the initial chaos.

This month, we seem to be moving into discussions about how to adjust business plans, manage remotely, deliver feedback when we can’t be in person, and how to keep our minds and our bodies in reasonable shape. I use the word “our” on purpose because now more than ever my clients want to know how I’m doing, and how I’m doing whatever I’m doing. It means a lot to me that they ask, and my answer is that I’m figuring out how to live this new way each day, trying not to panic when I have a bad day, and then seeing if I can do a little better the next day.

As I help them think about the self-care needed during this time, I always check in on how they’re sleeping since I believe being rested is always their best shot at doing all the other things they aspire to, and it's super important for a healthy immune system. Our team has blogged about that topic 23 times since 2011. You can look through some our posts for proof that sleep matters as well as tips for how to improve your sleep hygiene.

Many of my clients are physicians and healthcare administrators who are dealing with the realities of COVID-19 in ways that inspire me each time I talk to them. Several have appreciated the suggestions in this article, Get Some Rest: A Brief Guide for Those on the COVID-19 Front Lines. (I found it on my friend, Dr. Chris Winter’s, Twitter feed. He’s a frequent subject of my blog posts and is who I’ll recommend that you see if making some adjustments to your sleep hygiene habits doesn’t work. He’s got a great new telemedicine practice!)

As I read this article and reread some of our blog posts, I realized that what might help you more right now is a phone call rather than something else to read! If you’ve made it this far and would like to brainstorm about the adjustments you could make to your sleep habits to help you feel more rested, please contact me so we can schedule time to talk. In just a short conversation, I usually can help people pick a couple of things to change in support of a better night’s sleep. I’d love to do that for you.
