Resolve to Be Happier

7 January 2014

Allison read 7 Small Resolutions for a Big Happiness Boost in 2014 by Dr. Emma M. Seppälä on the Psychology Today blog and was glad to see some of the best happiness research compiled in one short post.

We spend a lot of time reading about happiness at Allison Partners and helping our clients figure out what steps they can take to bring a little more happiness into their lives. In fact, we like the topic so much that Rachel created a course called Happiness Matters.

I’ll definitely be adding Dr. Emma M. Seppälä’s Psychology Today blog post, 7 Small Resolutions for a Big Happiness Boost in 2014, to my recommended reading list. She dispels some outdated theories about how to achieve goals and gives a high level summary of many of the common happiness theories and practices. Within each of the seven “resolutions” she lists you’ll find hyperlinks to more in-depth posts she’s written as well as articles and some of the original happiness research by other authors.

  1. Replace Self-criticism with Self-Compassion
  2. Replace Complaints & Negativity with Gratitude
  3. Balance Seriousness with Play
  4. Balance Stress with Breathing
  5. Balance Self-Focus with Compassion for Others
  6. Balance Solitude with Connection
  7. Balance Activity with Doing Nothing

It’s a good list and the detail she provides for each of her suggestions will help you to actually put these resolutions into practice.
