Sage Social Media Advice for Facebook Users

18 June 2013

Allison read What to Do When You Goof on Facebook by Marijean Jaggers and appreciated another round of practical advice from her social media guru. Whether you’re a faithful member of the Facebook family or are still trying to decide whether to join the fun, today’s post is for you.

I thoroughly enjoy myself on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and find that all three are useful to me personally and professionally. That’s not a statement I thought I would ever make three years ago when I forced myself to join Facebook in April 2010 or two years ago when I started Tweeting in June 2011. I’ve walked into plenty of new business meetings where the potential clients first wanted to talk about my latest love of baseball post or a picture of somewhere I’ve visited. I've also appreciated being able to keep up with family and friends when I couldn't see them in person or make quite as many phone calls as I might have liked.

I’m sure I wouldn’t be enjoying myself as much as I am without the sage advice of my social media guru, Marijean Jaggers at Jaggers Communications. (If you’re curious about how Marijean convinced me Twitter was important and helped me to feel brave enough to get started, check out my 15 June 2011 blog post for tips that could help you, too.)

I find that one of the things that keeps people from joining Facebook or frightens existing Facebook users is the somewhat confusing rules about privacy (who sees what and why). And we’ve all experienced having our settings changed when Facebook makes upgrades or other changes. That’s why Marijean advises that you check your settings on a regular basis if you’re concerned about who sees what.

However, even if you always post personal rather than private things (one of Marijean’s most important pieces of advice) or have very strict controls on your privacy settings, it’s possible that you’ve “liked” something on Facebook you wish the rest of the world didn’t know you liked. Whether you regret some of your past “likes,” learn from others that your “likes” may be more public than you realize, or have no idea what I’m talking about, I think you’ll learn something important in Marijean’ s post, What to Do When You Goof on Facebook. (You’ll also enjoy a good laugh and the kind of "live and learn" spirit Marijean encourages social media users to embrace.)
