TEDxCharlottesville

11 November 2014

Allison read the TEDxCharlottesville web site and started to get excited for her community’s second annual conference this Friday 14 November 2014. (And thanks to the wonders of live stream video everyone can enjoy the day!)

If you’re a reader of blogs, then you may have watched a TED Talk online at some point. Maybe you've even been fortunate enough to enjoy a TED conference live. If you haven’t made your way to TED.com, then oh my goodness you are in for a treat! Everyone has their favorite Talks and two of mine are Brené Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability and Listening to Shame.

As you’ll learn here, “TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.” You’ll also find a link to these 11 must-see TED Talks.

Last year Charlottesville had its first TEDx and the day was fabulous. You can enjoy a recap of the 2013 conference as well as links to all of the speakers’ Talks here. (You'll need to scroll down and click on the speakers' picture to get a link to their videos.) I liked so many of the Talks and am friends with enough of the speakers (one of the many benefits of small town living), that it’s hard for me to figure out which one of the 21 to point you to. Therefore, I’ll just mention that Denise Stewart’s Talk inspired a blog post and Darius Nabors’ Phuket List Talk will make you laugh and help you rethink your bucket list strategy. I’ve since met Darius and learned that he approaches life just as he recommends. I find that kind of authenticity to be quite wonderful.

This year's conference is called “RefleXions” and the speaker lineup is sure to delight as well. Speakers John D’earth and Greg Fairchild have inspired me to write about mentorship and entrepreneurship in the past. As a student of mindfulness practices, I’m excited to hear what the three founders of the Holistic Life Foundation can teach me about their work, “…to nurture underserved communities through yoga and mindfulness practices.” I’ve also admired Aaron Fein’s digital embroidery art on Facebook and look forward to learning how his work, “… is guided by his belief that the slightest manipulations and the simplest contextual shifts inspire the mind’s most dramatic perceptual leaps.”

TEDxCharlottesville is sold out, but you can enjoy live stream video this Friday here and you can count on the conference organizers to post all of the talks sometime soon. Let the idea sharing begin!
