Lose Weight by Sleeping

1 March 2016

Allison watched a report on NBC Nightly News last night, and wondered if a new study from the University of Chicago about the connection between getting enough sleep and weight loss might be the motivation people need to make sleep a priority.

Last Tuesday, I wrote about the Center for Disease Control’s recent findings that more than one third of Americans are sleep deprived. While sleep is one of my more frequent blog topics, I seldom write about the same issue two weeks in a row. However, last night I saw a report on NBC Nightly News about the connection between sleep and weight loss that seemed quite compelling given how many people I know who are tired and unhappy about their weight.

In this two-minute clip, you’ll learn about new research from the University of Chicago that explains the vicious cycle of sleep deprivation, increased cravings for the foods we know we shouldn’t eat, and an inability to lose or maintain weight. Of all the things you need to do to manage your weight, I’m guessing sleep might be one of the easier and more enjoyable ways to get the job done.

At this point, you might be wondering why an organizational development consultant writes about sleep so often. It’s because being rested makes it so much easier to be an effective communicator, navigate conflict, be creative, think strategically, solve problems, manage change, make decisions, be a great boss, and make wise choices about life balance. Those are some of the main challenges our clients struggle with, and more often than not the leader I’m talking to is cutting corners when it comes to sleep.

I’ll close today the same way I closed last week… I hope you’ll find something in these past posts that helps you to make sleep a priority. I’ve written about the medical proof, how much sleep is enough (spoiler alert: it’s a different number of hours for each of us), tips for improving sleep hygiene (aka healthy sleep habits), how to quiet your mind, sleep advice from my 10-year old nephew, when you should see a doctor, and how my favorite sleep doctor (Chris Winter) helped the San Francisco Giants win three World Series in five years.
